The Maharashtra has a coastline of about 720 km. The coconuts are grown in large quantities in the Konkan region along this coastline. The coconut is cultivated on a total appx area of 22,750 hectre in the state. Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Palghar districts are leading in this cultivation 52,000 MT of coconut husk are available in the state annually.
As there is a large scope for coir-based industry in Maharashtra the Government has declared Maharashtra Coir Policy 2018 vide Government Resolution dated 15.02.2018. The Corporation is implementing for following intervention in the said policy. The link for the policy is as follows: -
In the said policy the role of MSSIDC is as follows: -
- Establishment of Coir Incubation, Research and Development Center at Kudal.
- Conducting training for entrepreneurship development and skill development to promote Coir industries.
- Participation in the domestic and international coir exhibitions. The concession to the extent of Rs.50,000/- or 75% in the rent of stalls for Coir Industries to participate in domestic exhibitions. A subsidy upto Rs.3.00 lakhs for participation in international exhibitions.
- Organizing exhibitions and setting up exhibition cum sales centers for the coir industry.
The Corporation has imparted training during F.Y. 2021-22 & 2022-23 to 8543 entrepreneurs for entrepreneurship development, and entrepreneurship awareness for coir. The training for skill development for 621 entrepreneurs is in progress.
Common Facility Centers for Coir in Sindhudurg District
The Corporation under the Resource-based intensive planning & development pilot project (known as Chanda te Banda scheme) in Sindhudurg District has established 7 nos. of Common Facility Centers (CFC) for processing coconut husk at Talegaon, Tulas, Sangeli, Sateli-Bhedshi, Parule, Hadi, and Zolambe. The centers established at Tulas, Sangeli, Parule & Hadi started functioning.
Under the said pilot project 880 women were trained for making coir yarn. The Corporation has given trainer’s training to 27 women for coir yarn and 10 women were trained for value-added items made out of coir at Central Coir Research Institute of Coir Board at Allepy, Kerala.
Common Facility Centers for Coir in Sindhudurg District
The Corporation in the year 2014-15 has established Maharashtra Coir Production, Training & Demonstration Center, Kudal, Dist.Sindhudurg. This center was established to promote the coir industry in Maharashtra and new entrepreneurs can see the actual production of coir & coir products at this center.
